Abstract

Intimate partner violence (IPV), the subset of domestic violence crimes that refers to violence between two intimate partners, is an issue that has caused much debate. This entry will provide an overview of these issues with emphasis placed on how IPV is defined and measured; the gender symmetry debate; societal, community, and individual factors; cost; the criminal justice system's response; and victim services.
