Abstract

Intimate partner violence (IPV), meaning physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and controlling behaviours by an intimate partner,1 is an important public health issue, and is well known to be related to poor mental health outcomes.2 Few studies have established a link between IPV and suicidal behaviour, which is a key aim of Sally McManus and colleagues' study in The Lancet Psychiatry.3 Using data from the 2014 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, the authors sought to estimate the prevalence of IPV among adults in England and establish the association with suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and suicide attempts.
