Abstract
Intestinal malrotation is defined as a defect in the normal rotation and fixation of the midgut during fetal life. There is a subtype called “nonrotation”, in which the small intestine is located on the right side of the abdomen and on the left side of the colon. It occurs in approximately 1 in 500 births, and up to 90% of symptomatic cases occur within the first year of life. There often are no symptoms at this stage, and this alteration could remain asymptomatic for the patient's entire life. However, it may first appear as an acute abdomen putting the patient´s life at risk if it is not diagnosed and treated quickly, given that patients with this anatomic variant are more likely to develop intestinal volvulus.
