Thecomplete type (type I) is characterized by the presence of absorp-tive cells, Paneth cells, and goblet cells secreting sialomucins andcorrespondstothesmallintestinephenotype.Theincompletetype,which encompasses types II and III, is characterized by the pres-ence of columnar and goblet cells secreting sialomucins and/orsulfomucins: neural and acid sialomucins in type II and sulfomu-cins in type III. Several studies have shown that type I has noincreased risk of developing carcinoma, whereas type III is asso-ciated with an increased risk of malignant transformation.
