Abstract

1. 1. Several simple laboratory tests for the differential diagnosis of pancreatic disease and nontropical sprue can be performed under the conditions of usual office practice. 2. 2. The most useful of these procedures, the d-xylose, serum carotene, and vitamin A tolerance tests, were evaluated in studies of patients with chronic pancreatitis and nontropical sprue and in appropriate control subjects. The results showed that these three simply performed tests offer the practitioner a dependable, practical aid in the differential diagnosis of diseases characterized by intestinal malabsorption. 3. 3. The d-xylose test, in the absence of renal disease, is a reliable measure of intestinal absorption.
