Abstract
William Byne: Access to care is a major contributor to LGBT health disparities, and adequate health insurance is a vital component of access. We would like for you to address several issues for our readers pertaining to insurance for sexual orientation and gender identity minority individuals. These include the impact of the Affordable Care Act— its provisions already in place—and those on preexisting conditions that will go into effect in 2014. We would also appreciate your views on coverage of same sex couples, gender transition services, and issues raised by recent proposals to systematically query and record LGBT status in electronic health records. Given your experience as a healthcare provider, your leading role in LGBT health advocacy through the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), together with your role as medical director for a major insurance company, you are uniquely qualified to address these issues.
