Brazilian analyst Lucia Azevedo speaks about the relationship of place and family background to her personal experience and her work as an analyst. She emphasizes the need to question whether analytic theories developed in Europe, with their implicit value judgments, are applicable in the Brazilian context, with its indigenous and African roots. She also discusses ways in which a “colonized complex” has helped to shape the self-worth of Brazilian analysts in relation to the European and American analytic communities.
