Abstract

David Hare has been one of the most influential members of his generation of British playwrights. He started out on the production side of the stage business, and then moved to collaborative writing and directing. With Tony Bicat he started the Portable Theatre, and subsequently he helped to found the Joint Stock Company. In 1970, he wrote Slag, a characteristically bold attack on the decadence of the money and male dominated society. Since then, he has continued to write plays which are marked by an intensely political and moral conscience. His most accomplished work followed his association with the National Theatre, and its production of Plenty, in 1978. Since then, he has turned out an impressive series of plays-including A Map of the World, The Secret Rapture, and Racing Demon. He has also written for television and film, and has directed some of his own work in these media, as well as on stage.
