Abstract

Objective To explore the effect of interventional embolization for treatment of massive hemoptysis. Methods A total of 27 cases with massive hemoptysis, who had to receive interventional embolization therapy as the conservative treatment exerted no effect, were enrolled in this study. The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed of the 27 patients. The pulmonary lesions included bronchiectasis (n=5), lung cancer (n=10)and pulmonary tuberculosis (n=12). Bronchial arteries were embolized with gelatin sponge and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particle. Results Marked reduction of bleeding was seen in 27 patients, and failure to stop bleeding in 2 patients 7 day later. The responsive rate was 92.59% (25/27). Conclusions Bronchial artery embolization is a safe, simple and effective method for acute massive hemoptysis. Key words: Hemoptysis; Bronchial arteries; Embolization, therapeutic
