Abstract

The increased sensitivity but poor specificity of contrast enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for the detection of focal breast lesions makes MR guided biopsy an essential adjunct to the diagnosis of breast cancer. However, poor access to the patient inside the bore of most MR imaging systems makes such procedures difficult. It is now possible to use MR imaging guidance without having to perform the biopsy within the bore of the scanner using a frameless stereotaxy system which consists of a ultrasonic localizer.
