Abstract

Drug abuse is one of the most serious social problems around the world. Available statistics indicate that prevalence of drug abuse has increased in Chile during the last seven years, especially among the younger population. The National Council for Drug Abuse Control, CONACE, and The National Health lnsurance System, FONASA, have stablished a formal agreement to support treatment and rehabilitation of drug abuse. Four different programe approaches were defined to cover most of the cases. These programes are First Contact with Patients Plan, Basic Ambulatory Plan, Intensive Ambulatory Plan and Institutionalisation of Patients Plan. Being Occupational Therapy the only discipline having human occupation as the basis for rehabilitation and social integration of patients, it appears very important to develop a theoretical and technical framework to implement therapy interventions with a solid OT approach and philosophy to treat patients with problems of drug abuse. This paper proposes a protocol of treatment and intervention for drug abuse patients based on OT fundamentals.
