Abstract
TiNi type shape memory alloys can absorb hydrogen during the electropolishing of TEM specimens and can be contaminated by oxygen when TEM specimens are heated in situ to above 200°C. These interstitial atoms can induce long-range ordering in the TiNi alloys and “extra” 1 2 -reflections which include 0 0 1 2 , 0 1 2 1 2 , 1 2 1 2 1 2 , 0 1 4 2 4 , 1 4 2 4 2 4 reflections. The degree of long-range order is higher in hydrogen ordering than that in oxygen ordering. The lifetime of the hydrogen ordering is about 2–3 h, but the oxygen ordering is stable for long times. This may be due to the high diffusivity of hydrogen and high affinity of oxygen in TiNi alloys.
