Abstract

AbstractSulphur hexafluoride, SF6, was used as a gaseous tracer to determine the rate of unassisted air movement in the microclimate of grain stored in steel bins. The airspeeds were influenced by the nature of the stored products, the size and geometrical shape of the kernels and the storage temperature. Air movement rates varied from 3 to 108 in/h depending on the temperature gradients. This is the first quantitative evidence of the ultraslow speed of air movement in stored grain.
