A Search for H2 2.4-Micrometer Vibration-Rotation Emission White, Richard E. Abstract Observations at 20 positions near five Pleiades stars yielded upper limits on H2 υ = 1-0 Q branch emission in the range (2.6 - 7.2)×10-5erg s-1cm-2sr-1. Corresponding limits on the column density in J = 1-5 of υ = 1 range from (1.3 - 3.7)×1015cm-2. Interpretation in terms of gas fluorescing and dissociating as it flows past the stars yields corresponding H2 density limits 400 - 1100 cm-3, values consistent with prior indirect estimates. An alternative interpretation in terms of collisional excitation yields less stringent limits.
