Abstract

This article discusses Luiz Gama's political-literary trajectory, in empire Brazil, in the 19th century, showing his pioneering spirit in the creation of dissident literature in the way of thinking about 19th century society. To this end, an analysis was made of the book Primeiras Trovas Burlescas, published in 1859, in order to highlight which were the intellectuals or writers who had significant importance in the construction of Gama's intellectuality. For this reason, we sought to verify the importance of reading for Luiz Gama to build himself a writer, emphasizing how the read works reflected in his poetic book. In this sense, the present research shows the extent to which Luiz Gama managed to detach himself from the carried out readings to create authentic poems and contrary to the aesthetic-political conceptions of the time.The current study has as theoretical contribution Silvio Oliveira (2004), Elciene Azevedo (1997), Ligia Ferreira (2011), Sud Mennucci (1938).
