Abstract

presidential campaign during this primary season has generated broad discussion of race and gender by the Democratic candidates, but also throughout the society.1 The tensions and challenges raised by the conflict between the first woman,** and first black*' candidates, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, have set off an unexpectedly exciting campaign. Whether these conflicts are manipulated by one or the other of the candidates, whether the very fact of them inevitably leads to this tension, what the source of the tensions are, how are we to understand them, is the subject of my effort in this paper. The campaign is far from over so this analysis is a work in progress, an exploration of political developments unfolding in front of us. It is an obvious topic for a Political Scientist it is on the morning news, in the headline news, it excites my students, and every Political Scientist I know, including me.
