Abstract

Abstract Intersectionality is a critical theoretical framework for understanding how overlapping systems of power and oppression at the societal level interact with identity dimensions at the individual level further to disadvantage people from historically and socially marginalized groups. Today, intersectionality has moved beyond its roots in legal theory and analysis and is becoming a critical framework to understand and address global health inequities. Many health communication scholars conduct research with populations with intersecting social identities. Yet, health communication studies that reflect intersectionality in their theoretical frameworks, design, or interpretations are rare. While there are theoretical and methodological challenges to an intersectional approach to health communication, the advantages of intersectionality for health communication theory, research, and practice on research abound.
