Abstract

Denatured phage DNA preparations are heterogeneous in the analytical ultra-centrifuge. Preparative zone sedimentation confirmed that the sedimentation diagrams reflect a true polydispersity of sedimentation coefficients among the polynucleotide strands. It is concluded that many phage particles—but not all—have one or more interruptions in the polynucleotide sequences, and the number of interruptions is consistent in a population of any one phage.
