Abstract

The use of products that contain high quantities of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive ingredient produced by the Cannabis plant, is rapidly increasing, particularly in the adolescent population. Concomitantly, recent evidence shows that such exposure increases the risk of developing mental health disorders, including earlier onset of depression, psychotic symptoms, and the recently defined psychiatric disorder cannabis use disorder (1). Cannabis use disorder is characterized by impaired memory processing, decision making, school/work performance, and social functioning and is triggered in vulnerable populations that use high quantities of THC (2).
