Being old-fashioned and hopelessly nostalgic or simply creatures of habit, he and his wife go to a neighborhood theater to see a movie and don't subscribe to an online service that provides streaming video directly to the home. Oddly enough, the retreat to a darkened theater actually has a calming and almost therapeutic effect on Sam, in spite of the stale air, economy-class seats, and occasional inconsiderate and boorish behavior of some of his fellow moviegoers. He wishes he didn't have to endure the mandatory advertisements for the concession stand and the seemingly endless series of previews for coming attractions, which always precedes the main feature. (Of course he knows this is only one more example of the ever-increasing number of instances in which the average man finds himself in a captive audience.)
