Abstract

Use of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) requires attention to the details of acquiring and analysis of the sample. Proper staining and interpretation is crucial in reducing the variability of lavage. We will review the commonly used Wright-Giemsa stain and discuss some of the problems which can be encountered when using this stain to evaluate BAL samples. After reading this article, the reader should understand how to collect and handle a bronchoalveolar lavage. The reader should also understand how to perform and interpret a Wright-Giemsa stain of the specimen. Histology exam 10401 questions and the corresponding answer form are located after the Your Lab Focus section on p. 573.
