Abstract

AbstractA new interpretation is given of data available in the literature for the rate of decarburization of molten iron carbon droplets. These droplets have been levitated in, or allowed to accelerate through, oxidizing atmospheres containing oxygen or carbon dioxide. A model has been developed using the Ranz and Marshall equation which accounts for forced convection and droplet acceleration. The predictions of the diffusion model and the observed rate data for decarburization are in good agreement.
