Abstract
Acoustic emission (AE) testing of large components, such as pressure vessels, must consider signal distortion by sound propagation. The transfer functions for energy, peak amplitude and signal duration of crack propagation signals in steel plates were determined experimentally, as were group velocity and change in the frequency spectrum. The results are presented and discussed in the context of AE testing of thick-walled components.
