Abstract
The authors suggest two interpolative block truncation coding (BTC) image coding schemes with vector quantization and median filters as the interpolator. The first scheme is based on quincunx subsampling and the second one on every-other-row-and-every-other-column subsampling. It is shown that the schemes yield a significant reduction in bit rate at only a small performance degradation and, in general, better channel error resisting capabilities, as compared to the absolute moment BTC. The methods are further demonstrated to outperform the corresponding BTC schemes with pure vector quantization at the same bit rate and require minimal computations for the interpolation. >
