Abstract

This paper presents an efficient, cost-effective, reliable power meter reading to AC power monitor in real time consumed by local and remote load. It is deemed important for consumers to understand their household energy consumption. Thus, the consumers are capable of identifying the energy saving, thereby requiring a real time energy monitoring system to provide feedback to consumers. This monitoring system is utilized to analyze and evaluate the output voltage, current, frequency or energy generated from a household appliance. A hardware device is utilized to gather energy data passed and stored to a database through PLX-DAQ resources. These resources are further applied by the web application to display such a real-time and historical energy reading. The developed energy monitoring system has an accuracy rate of 94% to obtain the correct energy consumption through testing with the rice cooker and experiment with the AC load, indicating the energy monitoring accuracy rate of 95%. The results of user's feedback during testing provides insights to supplementary features proving the usefulness of the energy monitoring system.
