Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate not only the prevalence of internet addiction among the male and female students but, also the relationship between internet addiction and depression. The tools of measurement used are the Young Internet Addiction and Beck Depression Questionnaire. The data was analyzed by t-test and correlation. The results show that prevalence of internet was more in male students than female students. Correlation analysis showed a positive and significant relation between internet addiction and depression.

Introduction

The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of internet addiction among the male and female students but, the relationship between internet addiction and depression. The current modes of information and communication technology such as the Computer, the Internet, and mobile phones have changed adolescents’ daily life drastically. Internet provides a quick and easy way to get the information needed and to communicate with people. In addition to these facilities, loss of the control over the use of internet may adversely affect daily activities, emotional status and communication among family members. Based on the viewpoint of relationship between using the Internet and users' psychological behaviors, the addicts often feel lonely, tend to play violent games, and have a high tendency to suffer from depression.
