Abstract

In recent years, the issue of solvent-induced effects on the central nervous system (CNS) has gained further momentum, and a number of clinicoepidemiological investigations have been carried out in Western Europe and the USA in addition to the Scandinavian countries, where the problem was first identified. Meanwhile, ad hoc meetings have been organized by ICOH (Como 1982), WHO (Cincinnati 1983 ; Copenhagen 1985 and 1988) and an independent scientific group in Raleigh (USA 1985). Despite recent progress and a better understanding of the problem, there are several important questions regarding the neurotoxicity of solvents that are still unanswered.
