Abstract

PrefaceThe International Symposium on Bioinformatics, Chemometrics and Metabolomics (ISBCM) 2016 was organized by Tropical Biopharmaca Research Center, Metabolomics Research Cluster-Directorate of Research and Innovation and Working Group on Bioinformatics FMIPA Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), supported by Indonesian Chemical Society, The Indonesian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Indonesian Society for Bioinformatics and Biodiversity. This event aims at sharing knowledge and expertise, as well as building network and collaborations among scientists working on Bioinformatics, Chemometrics and Metabolomics (BCM), which are vibrant multidisciplined fields with positive trend in this decade.Metabolomics is an “advanced research” approach used to improve our understanding of metabolic systems and biochemistry compositions of plants and animals. Chemometrics is a science of how to extract information from chemical systems that can be applied to solve both descriptive and predictive problems in experimental life sciences. Bioinformatics refers to conceptualizing biology in terms of macro molecule (from in chemistry and physics points of views) then applying computational approaches from informatics (applied mathematics, computer science and statistics) in order to understand and manage molecular information in its macro scale. This year’s theme is The emerging era of bioinformatics, chemometrics, and metabolomics in agriculture, food and health: current success, future potentials and challenges. This conference embraces all aspects of BCM applications for solving real problems in food, health and agriculture. High quality, original papers are solicited in all areas of Bioinformatics, Chemometrics and Metabolomics.ISBCM2016 was organized as a scientific symposium, which covers a keynote speech, some invited talks, and some contributed presentations and posters. At this moment, the meeting brought together about 100 participants who are composed of many active researchers, government officers, and entrepreneurs. There were 3 keynotes and 6 invited speakers sharing their expertise coming from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. There were 31 oral presentations and 38 poster presentations coming from Indonesia and overseas. In conjunction with this symposium we also held a workshop on application of chemometrics for quality control of medicinal plant. In this occasion, we were honored to have our distinguished keynote speakers Prof. Dr. Mohd Zaki Salleh (Universiti Teklogsi MARA), Dr. Sanjay Swarup (National University of Singapore), and Dr. Beben Benyamin (University of Queensland, Australia) and invited speakers Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman (Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Teh Lay Kek (Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia), Prof. Dr. Yaya Rukayadi (Universiti Putra Malaysia), Dr. Nancy Dewi Juliana (Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia), Dr. Farit M Afendi (Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia), and Dr. Awang Maharijaya (Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia). We also thank all participants for their contributions especially those who submit their full papers to the editorial board. Finally, we also thank our reviewers for maintaining a high quality standard of the accepted manuscripts for publication.Guest EditorsDr. Eng.
