Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the determining factors at the institutional level related to international students’ drop-out. For more than the last decade, the international student population in Korea has drastically expanded, and the social issues such as their drop-out, illegal stay or employment have emerged. Against this background, the Korean government started to implement ‘the accreditation system for international student recruitment and management’ from 2011. However, academic research on international students’ drop-out in Korean higher education has not received proper attention yet. Accordingly, this study has conducted an exploratory study on institutional-level factors related to international students’ drop-out in Korean higher education. Using 2012 data from the EDSS(EduData Service System) of the KERIS(Korean Education and Research Information Service), a total of 167 four-year institutions were included in analysis. Findings showed that the location and the size of institutions had significant relationships with international students’ drop-out rate. Implications and recommendations for future research have been provided.
