Abstract

During 1992,22 cultivar names in unassigned woody genera were registered. Photos and herbarium specimens will be deposited in the U.S. National Arboretum, Washington, D.C. Anyone who is involved in originating or introducing new cultivars of ornamental plants is urged to assure that the names are registered with a view to nomenclatural stabilization. A list of the international registration authorities is available from the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta, 786 Church Rd., Wayne, PA 19087, USA. Acer palmatum Thunb. ‘Lockington Gem’. Registered 1 May 1992. Registrant: Donald James Dosser, Lot 40, Woodspoint Rd., East Warburton, Victoria, Australia 3799. Dosser selected a chance seedling in his nursery because of its very dwarf, slow-growing habit and its tiny (1.5 cm) leaves. Its leaves are one-third the size of those of ‘Coonara Pygmy’ and ‘Goshiki Kotohime’. They also display good fall color. A 6-year-old plant is upright and 60 cm tall with a 30-cm spread. Acer palmatum Thunb. ‘Warburton Pigmy’. Registered 1 May 1992. Registrant: Donald James Dosser, Lot 40, Woodspoint Rd., East Warburton, Victoria, Australia 3799. Dosser selected a chance seedling in his nursery because of its dwarf, flat-topped habit. A lo-yearold plant has a 30-cm height and spread; its leaves are 3 cm across and turn red in the fall. It will not grow longer shoots even after heavy feeding or grafting. Arctostaphylos auriculata Eastw. ‘Knobcone Point’. Registered 3 Apr. 1992. Registrant: Stephen W. Edwards, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley, CA 94708, USA. Edwards selected a wild plant on Mt. Diablo, Contra Costa County, Calif., because of its small, toothed, blue-green leaves that densely clothed the stems, giving it a semi-imbricate appearance. The plant had a 2-m height and spread. It is hardy in USDA Zone 8 and does best in welldrained soils. It was described in the Journal of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden [9(1):6-7, 1991]. Arctostaphylos edmundsii J.T. Howell var. parvifolia ‘Bert Johnson’. Registered 3 Apr. 1992. Registrant: Stephen W. Edwards, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley, CA 94708, USA. James Roof, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, selected a wild plant in Monterey County, Calif., for its compact, mounding habit, and collected cuttings. The plant, estimated to be 30 years old, was ≈ 60 cm tall and had a 3-m spread. Its berries and leaf margins were bronze. It is hardy in USDA Zone 8 and prefers well-drained soil, but tolerates clay. It was described in the Journal of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden [9(1):5, 1991]. Arctostaphylos rufigioensis Gankin ‘Pink Glory’. Registered 3 Apr. 1992. Registrant: Bertram G. Johnson, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley, CA 94708, USA. The original plant was collected by James Roof, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, and was selected in 1991 by Johnson for its spectacular profusion of rosy-pink flower clusters which are followed by showy berries in summer and fall. A 28-year-old plant has a height and spread of 2 to 3 m. It is very drought, frost, and heat hardy. A description appears in the Journal of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden [9(1):9, 19911. Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. ‘Green Supreme’. Registered 3 Apr. 1992. Registrant: Bertram G. Johnson, Regional Parks Botanic Garden, Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley, CA 94708, USA. Johnson selected a plant in the botanic garden in 1991 for its dense habit, bright-green color, and disease and drought tolerance. The 22year-old plant was 10 to 15 cm tall and had a 4-m spread. It is frost hardy and adaptable to a variety of soils, even clay. It was described in the Journal of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden [9(1):13, 1991].
