Abstract

AbstractThis chapter discusses international plant health with an emphasis on plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) and with reference to key nematode species. The early legislation enacted and the international phytosanitary initiatives against PPNs are discussed. The phytosanitary problems posed by plant-parasitic nematodes, and the determination of the risk posed by plant-parasitic nematodes using pest risk analysis are described. Phytosanitary measures for PPNs and their associated cost:benefits are explained. Future challenges for the control of regulated nematodes and the challenges facing scientific advisers and researchers are mentioned.
