Abstract

The purpose of the project was to strengthen the health care system in the southern region, focusing on the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and prevention of diseases. Concrete goals consisted of the establishment of a health examination system and the active promotion of health education. As a subset to these goals, and to assist with their achievements, we also planned structured epidemiological studies of the inhabitants' awareness of health-related topics and associated cultural habits. A medical examination system was successfully established in the southern region, with both static (wellness clinic) and mobile (mobile clinic) components. the medical examination staff inaugurated a diabetes class, and some communities established health promotion activities. In addition, with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Jamaican Ministry of Health (MOH) will establish “Third Country Training” to promote motivation for the maintenance and continuation of these activities during the current year. Some reflections on the project have been identified.
