Abstract

Just as the first of the ISO 14000 environmental management standards were being published, an international forum rejected the idea of creating similar voluntary standards for occupational health and safety (OH&S) earlier this month. More than 300 participants from 45 countries representing business and industry, labor, government, insurance, standards-developing organizations, certification and registration bodies, and OH&S professionals participated in a workshop sponsored by the Genevabased International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The consensus of this group, according to ISO and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which represents the U.S. in international standards setting, is a lack of support.
