Abstract

International freshwater law has a significant role to play in addressing global water-related issues. This chapter examines the corpus of international freshwater law and how it has evolved in response to transboundary water challenges across the world. It considers the role and relevance of the two global Water Conventions, and the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals on transboundary water cooperation. In addition, the chapter examines key elements of international freshwater law, including matters related to scope, substantive norms, procedural rules, institutional arrangement and dispute settlement mechanisms.
