Abstract

The Space Science Board (SSB) of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Space Science Committee (SSC) of the European Science Foundation (ESF) have recently issued a report entitled “An International Discussion on Research in Solar and Space Physics,” which grew out of a workshop held in September 1983 at Sea Pines Plantation, S.C. The idea for the joint U.S./European Workshop, with balanced participation from both sides of the Atlantic, was originally raised as early as 1980 in the Space Science Committee of the ESF. The Space Science Board assigned the principal responsibility for the workshop to its Committee on Solar and Space Physics (CSSP).
