Abstract

Six international meetings on mechanics were held between 1922 and 1946 when the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics was formally established. Two years later in 1948, the US Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics was established, primarily as a vehicle for participating formally in these international conferences. As has been described previously, the International Congresses were organized and administrated by a group called the International Congress Committee. The history of participation by Americans (and future Americans) who were members of the International Congress Committee during the early years of the congresses are provided in the following list where the year is the year of election to a 4-year term:
