Abstract

Dr. Milhorat and his associates are to be congratulated for the excellent organization of this volume which is a collection of papers from the International Conference convened by the Muscular Dystrophy Associations of America at Arden House, Harriman, New York, in October 1966. These papers and their discussions represent thoughts of many noted experts in the area of muscular disease and afford interesting and informative reading. The book is divided into eight sections, the last of which consists of closing remarks. The first section presents a general but lucid and succinct survey of muscle disease, including dystrophies, polymyositis, congenital myopathies, and neurogenic muscular atrophies. This section is recommended to all pediatricians. The subsequent sections deal with myogenesis, genetics, fiber types, neuropathy and myopathy, basic mechanisms of muscle contraction, and physiology and biochemistry.
