Abstract

ForewordThe international conference “Structural and phase transformations in materials: theory, computer modelling and experiment” (SPTM 2017) was held on the Chusovaya base on March 23-27, 2017 (∼ 80 kilometers from the fourth-largest city in Russia, Ekaterinburg). The conference was organized by the Ural Federal University (Laboratory of Multi-Scale Mathematical Modeling). The conference was devoted to discussions of the current state and new scientific achievements on the subject of structural and phase transformations in materials, including the following topics:• Theory of the Processes• Experiments and Their Results• Software and Hardware for Modeling• Results of Computer Simulation. The present event paid its special attention to the phase transformation phenomena such as dendritic growth, nucleation and pattern formation including theory, experiment and software developments. The organizing Committee was pleased to welcome more than 40 participants from 8 countries attending the conference (Belarus, China, France, Germany, India, Morocco, Russian Federation, and Ukraine). The Organizers have selected 34 peer reviewed research papers in the present issue of IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. We hope that the present papers will be of interest for readers and represent a thorough research skeleton for inspiration and future developments.Yours sincerely,Dmitri V. Alexandrov, Peter K.
