Abstract

In recent years, governments have achieved some success in saving human lives from the threats of disasters, however, the direct economic losses in the form of property and infrastructural losses continue to rise. Recent catastrophic events have highlighted that the loss and damages experienced in the critical infrastructure sectors (viz., transport, power, telecommunication, water infrastructure) alone could be more than 50% of the total direct economic losses. This is expected to result in loss of lives and livelihoods for people and create serious economic and fiscal problems for the government. Realizing the need to address such losses, governments and other stakeholders including multilateral development banks, research organizations, and the private sector have started forming coalitions and alliances to (re)build disaster and climate resilient infrastructure. This chapter elaborates on few such coalitions forming across the globe and highlights the key developments and emerging issues in this space.
