Abstract

The study purpose was to describe international clinical experiences (ICE) in U.S. pre-licensure registered nurse (RN) educational programs and explore academic administrators’ understanding of their state board of nursing (BON) regulations related to these experiences. Deans and/or directors of all pre-licensure RN programs in the United States were surveyed. Approximately one-fourth of the 900 respondents indicated their programs included ICE and were primarily offered as elective/capstone courses in the junior or senior year. Only 89 of the 900 schools of nursing indicated ICE could be applied to required clinical hours. Some respondents were uncertain about BON regulations regarding ICE, indicating that more education and greater clarity regarding rules and regulations are needed. Understanding similarities across BONs would help nursing school program directors, faculty, and individual BONs as they develop or expand this important pedagogical opportunity.
