Abstract

The ABC, desperate to meet the government's direction to slash its budget by $55 million next financial year, has seized on the recommendations in the 'Mansfield report that it stop international sound broadcasting and sell off its international television service. The ABC hopes to pocket Radio Australia's budget of more than $20 million, and Australia Television's budget of more than $6 million. But the recommendations have brought a storm of protest from many quarters, and a Senate committee is inquiring into the role and future of RA and ATV. Some in Australia have suggested that shortwave broadcasting is passe. But the BBC World Service, the Voice of America and Radio France Internationale are spending millions on new shortwave services, and Radio China International has bought new shortwave transmitters to strengthen its output.
