Abstract
Abstract: This adapted discourse analysis entails a critical examination of a young Black gay man’s beliefs about his resistance to using condoms, initially tied to his being stubborn and sexually spontaneous. It brings to light how multiple forms of minority stress have contributed toward a strong need to be self-reliant after an extensive history of rejection, occluding his ability to accept well-intended advice from caring others. Methodologically, this study demonstrates how a critical interviewing process can be used to allow racially minoritized participants a structure within which to question dominant discourses that may be obscuring underlying experiences and needs.
