Abstract

A novel wideband metal-plate antenna suitable for application as an internal laptop antenna for wireless local area network (WLAN) or wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) operation is presented. The antenna is also suitable to be integrated into the supporting metal frame of a laptop-computer display as an integrated antenna. In this study, the proposed antenna can provide a wide operating bandwidth of 3.9 GHz (2.1–6.0 GHz), thus allowing it to easily cover the required bandwidths for WLAN operation in the 2.4/5.2/5.8-GHz bands or for WMAN operation adopting the IEEE 802.16e standard in the 2.3–5.85-GHz band. The proposed antenna is studied in detail in this paper, and the experiment and simulation results are presented. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
