Abstract

The internal friction and shear modulus of pure recrystallized polycrystalline aluminium wires has been studied as a function of temperature by measurement of the logarithmic decrement of the free vibrations (64 and 200 c/s) in shear strain (ϵ ≈ 10 −5) after irradiation with fast neutrons at 4.6°K. The elementary processes related to these internal friction maxima are discussed in terms of the corresponding elastic dipole tensors and the annealing model for irradiated aluminium.
