Abstract

Interpretations for the M2, M3 and M4 internal friction peaks observed (Part I) [ Acta metall. mater. 41, 3277 (1993)] during heating of virgin martensite from 82 to 350 K are presented. M4 and M3 peaks can be attributed to the generation of kink-pairs along non-screw and screw dislocations, respectively, while M2 peak is related to the interaction between non-screw dislocations and interstitial carbon atoms. Activation energies and pre-exponential factors of relaxation time τ 0 are determined for each peak. Peierls stress of martensite is estimated.
