Abstract

The conversion coefficient of the 14.4 keV Mössbauer transition in Fe 57 was determined from the effective nuclear resonance cross section of a thin natural iron foil placed in a saturating magnetic field. Near natural line widths were obtained with a single line source with precisely known resonant fraction. The total conversion coefficient of 9.0±0.4 is in agreement with recent values from nuclear spectroscopy.
