Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering has been employed to study the crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations of ${\mathrm{Sm}}^{3+}$ ions in SmB${\mathrm{a}}_{2}$C${\mathrm{u}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{7}$. We have been able to assign the energetic ordering of all the three and four CEF states in the ground-state and first-excited $J$ multiplets $^{6}H_{5/2}$ and $^{6}H_{7/2}$, respectively. A set of CEF parameters was derived which excellently describes the observed energy spectra.
