Abstract
Raman spectra of liquid H 2O, D 2O and their isotopic mixtures have been investigated in the region of the deformation modes. Comparison with ν 2(HDO) shows that differences in band shape and peak frequencies in isotropic and anisotropic scattering for H 2O and D 2O are caused by intermolecular coupling and not by the presence of discrete molecular species in liquid water. The changes in ν 2 band parameters, produced by addition of electrolytes and non-electrolytes, are briefly discussed.
