Abstract

Phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compound formation in solutions of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with a series of halogenated hydrocarbons that were selected to give a wide range of electron acceptor properties. The following intermolecular compounds were identified: DMF . CCl4, (DMF)2 . CCl4, DMF . CBrCl3, (DMF)2 . CBrCl3, DMF . CFCl3, and DMF . C6H5CCl3. No compounds were formed in solutions of DMF with either CH3CCl3 or C6H5CF3. The results suggest charge transfer from DMF to the chlorine atoms of the acceptor molecule as the process for compound formation. A solid phase transition in DMF, difficult to obtain, was identified.
