Abstract

A method is presented to solve the differential equation describing vertical flow in partly saturated soils. A high-speed digital computer was used to obtain solutions for different initial and boundary conditions representing alternating infiltration and drainage cycles in the absence of evaporation in a uniform soil of infinite depth with a uniform initial moisture content. The hysteresis in the moisture-suction relationship was taken into account by means of the concept of independent domain, and its effect was studied.
